About this experience

Most visitors to Mumbai never see Kanheri. Inside the forest of Sanjay Gandhi National Park, over a hundred caves are carved into a basalt hill, forming an ancient Buddhist monastery that was active for many centuries. It is quiet, green and very different from the city outside.

Your guide explains the monks’ cells, the great prayer hall, the carvings and the clever water cisterns that once served the community. The caves are spread across the hillside, so expect some walking and steps. Your private car takes care of the long drive from the city.
